I... I was looking for an image for a joke but... There is no need anymore. We are done I think. BMW did it for us.

Wait so the turn signal always returns to center? Why overcomplicate such a simple thing as a turn signal stalk?

Pros and cons to this... I actually broke my turn signal stalk on my G6 before, the self cancel sometimes doesn’t work, think I broke the cancel spring when my finger was still resting on the stalk when it tried to cancel. In this electronic switch, there’s no tab to break. Downside is it’s WAY too twitchy and self cancels way too early.
Source: me, I used both.

My dad’s Ford Edge does that. It’s odd.

That “triple turn signal” bugs me. I mean, signalling is primarily about communicating your future intent to leave your lane, and secondly about explaining your present maneuvering as you briefly straddle two lanes. But three blinks doesn’t sound like it’s quite enough to cover the whole event.
Personally, I think that there should be at least two flashes before leaving your lane. One flash before merging kinda feels like an ambush, defeating the purpose. As for the merge itself, you obviously don’t want to spend a long time taking up two lanes, but it shouldn’t be a jackrabbit kind of move either. I feel like it should take two or three flashes to move from one lane to the next. Boom. Done. And of course, once you’ve gotten all four wheels into your desired lane, the signalling needs to come to an immediate end so no one thinks you’re aiming for the next lane.
So that makes four blinks. Minimum. I wonder what the thinking was behind making 3 BMW’s “default” number?

Some cars (Ford?) will let you choose between 3, 4 or 5 blinks.

I think BMWs default number is zero, you should be happy you even get 3, peasant.

On mine I can choose between 3 and 5

I completely agree. This is a brilliant idea for a function that many new cars have, but it should be four or five blinks.

I see what you’re saying, but I have to be honest and say I use the triple signal to change lanes every time.

What’s your preferred method for using the feature? How do you decide when to have those flashes occur?

Only time I use it is for highway/interstate lane changes and I will hit the stalk as I am getting ready to change if there’s no traffic behind me. If I am passing somebody on a two lane road it just kinda depends on how fast I get over, but I will usually just hold it so it’ll flash 4-5 times. Where I live traffic isn’t terrible, so it works ok for this environment. In a bigger city with heavier traffic, though, I do feel 4-5 flashes is more sufficient.

Makes sense. Yeah, if my car had the feature, I’d probably override it a lot too.
Good point about no-traffic situations. It seems suited really well for those, where you’re just signaling out of habit (or formality, just in case a bored cop is hiding in the shadows lol).

It’s something that originated in Germany because on the delimited autobahn you do not indicate when you think you are getting over, you signal when you are getting over. In Germany you do not get over unless you are sure it is clear and it is mostly to let those approaching at speed (either because you’re leaving a passing lane or moving into a passing lane) know you are in fact getting out of their way or into their way. In Germany you only really use the triple turn signal on the autobahn, and if you drive like Germans and you only get over when it is truly clear and not into the way of quickly approaching traffic (you only get into passing lane if traffic approaching is far behind and the light is to get their attention) then they work perfectly.

Yeah that’s the good thing about it. It can be overridden so it’s not like you’re stuck with that as your only choice.
Once you get used to it, it’s really not a big deal. Like you said, it becomes habit in certain situations.

This video is fake. BMWs do not have indicators.

My Ford doesn’t seem to let me choose, unfortunately. 3 blinks is too short.
